PROJECT INFORMATION

Tasmanian Regional Arts (TRA) has been working with a number of key stakeholders on Branching Out, a Social Enterprise (SE) Development project utilizing the arts and working with regional Tasmanian arts communities.

Branching Out has great potential to grow the capacity of Tasmanian artists, community arts organizations & art spaces as it is implemented. So what is Social Enterprise? Put simply it is an enterprise or venture that can have social, community, cultural and financial outcomes.

‘…a creative endeavour that results in social, financial, service, educational, employment or other community benefits’. Adelaide Central Mission’s Social Enterprise in Australia 2002 handbook

Branching Out is funded through the Westpac Foundation and was born from the need to identify opportunities for regional community arts groups to better support themselves and access resources to encourage arts and cultural activities within their regions.

This two year project is managed by Kylie Eastley, who is working with a small team within TRA to:
  • develop internal resources to respond to social enterprise ideas/projects
  • support the 28 branches and affiliates to identify enterprising strategies to help support future projects
  • look for other opportunities for TRA to build capacity as an organisation
  • Facilitate the broader discussion of social enterprise within the arts industry and non profit sector
